Owning a Maltese Dog is one of the more simpler pleasures in life. A companion and friend forever. They are always there for you and play time is always welcome. They learn fast and successful puppy training is just a matter of time. Full of personality and wit, they are fearless of people.
In addition to a great disposition, they have little to no genetic anomalies. It’s no wonder their bred is gaining much popularity. A Maltese is easily recognized by it’s long, flowing silky white hair.
They seem to float on air as they walk (or prance may be a better word). Some owners prefer to maintain a puppy cut as grooming their long hair requires a lot of time and maintenance.
This toy breed is the perfect pet for an apartment or condominium dweller, as they only need a small amount of space to run around. But as with every dog, they need exercise. Walking your Maltese before a training session will actually increase their learning ability.
While almost all dogs shed, the Maltese sheds very little in comparison to other long-coated breeds. It is believed to be a hypoallergenic dog breed which some people with allergic might find themselves okay to own this breed.
General Appearance of Maltese Dog
The general appearance of the Maltese Dog is one with a slightly rounded skull, drop ears, dark and round eyes and a black nose. It’s body is compact and length almost equals their height. Legs are fine-boned and nicely feathered and the tail is bushy and over the back.
Thier coat is long, silky and hangs over the sides of the body. The color is pure white and other colors such as cream or light lemon may be present but for a show dog, undesirable. Their average height ranges between 7 to 10 inches, and weighs approximately 3 to 7 pounds.
The Maltese is a very social animal and can co-exist with other dogs and even cats with no problem. Because of their size, they are not recommended as a pet with young children as they can be hurt easily.
While they are among the gentlest mannered of all toy breeds, they will none the less protect their household with vigilance.
